We all have at least one song that turns us into a completely different person.
As soon as it starts, you’re in show mode. You have to sing along, and you probably have some moves that go along too.
How long is that song? Three minutes maybe? Three and a half? Somewhere in between?
It turns out there may be a way to use this spontaneous energy to your advantage as a productivity tool.
The Bottom Line on Top of this episode is that a few minutes of fun can be a surprisingly effective way to get your brain moving.
Here’s the idea.
Pick one of your favorite sing-along songs. The one that instantly changes your mood the second it starts. The one you know every word to (or at least think you do).
Now pick one small thing that’s been hanging out on your to-do list.
Maybe it’s cleaning a drawer. Deleting some old emails or apps. Folding laundry. Stretching. Whatever tiny task has been taking up space in your brain.
Now play the song while you work on the task. As soon as the song’s done, so are you.
That’s it. That’s the whole strategy.
And before you dismiss this as silly, that is actually the point. Silly and effective are not opposites.
And, there’s some brain science behind this, too.
You already have a positive association with that song. So, when it starts, your reward circuitry lights up. All of a sudden you’re not forcing yourself to be motivated; you’re now borrowing the momentum from something you already enjoy and you’re just applying it to life stuff.
Music, as one of our senses, changes our level of activation. It can shift our energy and focus our attention.
Singing also activates the vagus nerve, which ties directly into our nervous system and helps regulate stress. So while you’re karaoke-ing your way through tasks, your brain and body are also getting a little reset.
Another benefit is that this removes the pressure for the task to become an entire production.
You don’t need to clean the whole garage. Or write a full report.
You just need a few minutes, a mental kickstart…and maybe some backup singers.
Once your brain gets going, it often keeps going.
Maybe the song ends and you stop. Maybe the song ends and you keep going for a while.
Maybe you’re suddenly three songs deep and reorganizing your kitchen like a tiny disco-powered tornado. Who knows?
The point is that you took action…and not in the traditional, boring way.
You’re out there adulting and getting your nervous system a boost at the same time. Honestly? That’s efficient.
Not everything that needs to get done needs to get done all at once. There is no rule that says tasks have to become heroic marathon sessions.
And maybe most importantly, your brain learns that getting started doesn’t require suffering.
Sometimes progress starts with something much smaller: one song, one focused task, and just enough momentum to begin.
So next time you’re feeling stuck on something, turn up the volume and give this a try.
Rock on, rock stars. You got this.
